Officially Sidetracked...

I will get back to posting about wedding stuff tomorrow, I swear! But I was hoping I could get some advice/opinions from anyone who likes giving advice or their opinion. As I mentioned I got a new job which I am super excited about but that means I have to give up the company car and purchase a car. I have never purchased a car before and want to make a good, smart decision but I kind of also want something fun. So if anyone has any car horror stories or cars they absolutely love please share!

I am kind of digging the new VW Rabbit or Jetta. The Jetta Wagon is adorable but alas I can not afford and they are charging some $1,000 mark up because there are so few available. Boo.

I like to give advise so as someone would has purchased 3 cars {there is a story and reason as to why I have purchased 3 cars I swear} I will play along and give the things I would consider:

Make sure it gets good gas mileage!! :)

It seems like I heard that the Jetta's were not getting great reviews for how well they hold up??

I would try to find out the average for maintenance cost {as in how much they typically breakdown}...

Oh and it should definitely be cute and something you think is fun to drive... I will be very jealous if you get a Mini Cooper {but not the new one as the back is messed up}!

I own a VW GTI and I have to tell you that they are very expensive to keep up and there really isn't anyone in the city who deals with Volkswagons except for ($$$) that place down on Rush. I love my car, but I wish I had a Honda sometimes. Two cents. Good luck in the hunt!

Everyone I have talked to says Hondas are probably your most reliable. I actually bucked the trend of family VW lovers and have a Mazda3. It is pretty affordable and true to its commercial - zoom, zoom...

I had a Mazda 6....crashed that. but did like it very much. Now I have a VW Jetta. Loved the car until we started getting some engine issues. We're sad to possibly get rid of it as I love everything else about it, but they are very expensive on the up keep. Hondas are nice but they are kind of pricey for a bare bones model. I'm probably not much help am I? I might still be bitter about not getting the VW Beetle!

Three friends of mine had VWs (a Jetta, a Bug, and a Passat)and they all got rid of them for the same reason - because of how expensive they were to keep up. Any time the smallest thing went wrong with it, they had to special order parts which were very expensive and hardly anyone works on them so you have to pay tons to go to a specialist (probably only dealers, not sure).

I'm in the market right now and I'm all about domestic cars so I'm loving the Saturn Aura and Chevrolet Malibu. I've had a Chevrolet Cavalier for 8 years and it's perfect, so if you like something smaller, the Cobalt might be a good choice because it replaced the Cavalier.

Happy hunting!

You were so lucky to have a company car! My fiance has one and it is a life saver.

As for my 2cents....growing up with a father who owns his own mechanic/truck company I know a lot about cars and what they really end up costing in the long run. Hondas are by far the number one choice in our family (which includes Acura, check out the TSX) followed by toyota/lexus. You may pay a bit more on the front end, but the reliability, peace of mind and ability to repair cheaply make them worth it!

I'm going to be in the market for a new car pretty soon as well. I can't wait!

I would recommend Honda above everything else. They're consistently ranked among the best by Consumer Reports as being reliable and affordable. I've had my Civic for 4 years now and have always been happy.

I like the look of VWs, too ... but don't know much about them. Good luck with it! And make sure you 'negotiate' (read: haggle) to get a good price. I brought someone with me that was better at it than I was and ended up getting a good price as well as a free tint job!
